The department joined the rest of the university in welcoming Prof. Carolyn Bertozzi to campus to receive an honorary degree from Duke University at Cemmencement Ceremonies May 11.  Prof. Bertozzi is the T.Z. and Irmgard Chu Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and professor of molecular and cell biology at the University of California at Berkeley.  She is an investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and senior faculty scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

Prof. Bertozzi's research brings innovations from chemistry to bear on problems of biomedical significance. Her work focuses on methods for imaging molecular changes associated with cancer and bacterial infections, and on the development of new biotherapeutics that merge chemical and biological components.

Prof. Bertozzi is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Medicine, the National Academy of Inventors and the German Academy of Sciences.
