1991 Major: Chemistry

How has being a Chemistry graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"When I graduated, the country was in a recession and jobs were difficult to come by. However, have a science major was very beneficial to securing a job because it spoke to the analytical nature of how I was trained to think and approach problems. My career path has never been in science, but being able to think through issues and recognize a systematic way to resolutions has been key to any success I have enjoyed."

What advice would you give students in Duke's Chemistry programs?

"Chemistry is a difficult and complex subject. Showing a level of proficiency will open doors that are not so apparent and may not have any direct relationship to your specific major. I went into consulting after school and have since carved out a career in finance. Focusing on the learning process and how to analytically look at facts and data is more important than ever in any career path that you choose."
