S. Sam Lim, B.A. 1992

Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology, Emory University – Atlanta, Georgia

1992 Major: Chemistry

How has being a Chemistry graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"Chemistry is a science that goes to the very basic levels of molecular structure but ultimately demands that one also see the bigger picture. This discipline served me well through medical school. But little did I know that it would also draw me into the social sciences. I am now devoting my life to better understanding how social determinants of health impact autoimmunity."

What advice would you give students in Duke's Chemistry programs?

"The skills you are learning now will serve you well in broad areas, both professionally and personally."
