1996 Major: Chemistry

How has being a Chemistry graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"Initially, my chemistry major helped me by giving me background knowledge for my intro classes in medical school. It also helped me to define and conduct clinical research studies. I continue to use the logic, reasoning, and writing skills in my orthopedic practice. I also apply my knowledge of chemistry in my culinary activities that definitely increased during the pandemic years."

What advice would you give students in Duke's Chemistry programs?

"Be curious. Ask questions. Stay organized. Don’t procrastinate. Challenge yourself to explore the concepts of what you learn in your coursework with independent study and research projects."
