2014 Major: Chemistry

How has being a Chemistry graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"Studying chemistry at Duke provided me with the foundation necessary to take on the challenges of medical school and eventually a career as a surgeon. The required courses are challenging, and they teach much more than just the science of chemistry. I learned how to work hard and efficiently, rigorously evaluate and create scientific literature, and think creatively and flexibly about difficult problems."

What advice would you give students in Duke's Chemistry programs?

"Chemistry is not an easy major, but it will prepare you well for any career. Whether you are planning to go into academic chemistry, industry, pharmaceuticals, or medicine, you will leave Duke with the foundational knowledge, problem-solving skills, and work ethic to take on any challenge. In contrast to other majors that are traditionally thought of as "pre-med," I use chemistry daily in my practice of surgery and am forever thankful for the mentors who helped me achieve my goals."
