How has being a Chemistry graduate from Duke helped shape your professional success?

"I feel my academic background at Duke University provided me with a solid basis for success in academia as veterinary radiation oncologist. As a chemistry major at Duke University, I gained a basis in science and research and a work ethic that has carried me throughout my academic and scientific career. It shaped my thought process, scientific writing skills, and use of evidence-based medicine. The challenges it gave me them prepared me for the numerous challenges I'd face in my further schooling and now in my profession."

What advice would you give students in Chemistry?

"Work hard and keep your mind open to all possible careers in science. Even if you don't become a chemist, the education and skills from a Chemistry degree will be very pertinent in many health care professions as well as prepare you for the volume of knowledge needed in graduate degree programs. Try to branch out into research during your undergraduate time - it's a great experience and will serve you well into your future. Get to know your professors one on one; personal connections carry well into the future."
