Abstract:  The design, synthesis, and biological characterization of a new class of antibiotics which target siderophore biosynthesis will be described.  This work also led to the development of novel methodology for recycling phosphines in the Mitsunobu, Wittig, Appel, and Staudinger reactions that has proven useful for synthesis of the reported antibiotics.
